In Neill Blomkamp's debut full-length masterpiece an alien species is stranded on earth and the decades symbiosis has become a turbulent way of life for both races and for all the wrong people. The plot is anything but perplexing and the movie takes its time to gain momentum gradually as it goes. However, the time spent on familiarizing the spectator with the setting and the main plot is efficiently distributed, delivering a good pacing overall throughout the 100+ minutes the movie runs. The action sequences are few and top-notch. The special effects blend seamlessly in the realistic world, having an almost palpable feel to them. Great writing, outstanding direction, lifelike characters (most of the time), phenomenal use of cgi effects and satisfying action moments, all have masterfully been woven together in a monumental effort to provide a deep, allegoric, verisimilar world, through an unconventional sci-fi expression, reminiscent of the old time classics of the genre. Highly recommended!
