La habitación de Fermat (2007)

Fermat's Room is a spanish thriller about four mathematicians who are invited in a secret meeting, provided they can solve a peculiar math problem first. Apparently, each one solves the problem and all make it to attend this special meeting. Smart choices in the script, very good management of ideas and solid performances deliver both an interesting and a well paced film. As a sidenote: post Sixth Sense, a whole lot of films tend to employ a certain storytelling technique in order to keep the viewer's interest, forgoing deep storyline altogether. It certainly does the trick and few exceptions even manage to nail the formula. Typically, however, the story ends up feeling a little weak and this narrative mechanic a bit too old. Disappointingly enough, Fermat's Room is no exception and at times, events and behaviors while making sense, feel either forcefully imposed or clumsily constrained where should have developed naturally as consequence of what had come to pass. It is an enjoyable movie for as long as it lasts and some quotes may be more thought provoking than the story itself or the characters' personalities for that matter. Just keep in mind to take the bad along with the good things that come with this type of storytelling and you might end up having 90- minutes well spent. Recommended.
