The Death and Life of Bobby Z (2007)

The resemblance of Tim Kearney (Paul Walker), a headstrong and hardboiled ex-marine convict, with Bobby Z, a notorious drug dealer, is the former's only ticket to freedom, should he decide to cooperate with the DEA. The plan is for Tim to impersonate the latter in an exchange of him with a DEA agent who is kept hostage by drug dealers. While more or less we are very familiar with this type of action movies, the plot finds its ways to keep the main character on the run, never neglecting to deliver slight strokes of humor and romance along the way. And a couple of narrative tricks, give the film a hint of mystery as well. The performances are good - given the simplicity of the characters - and never amaze or disappoint. This is a generic action film and if viewers are OK with this, the movie does what it does well enough to keep them amused for a little more than 90 minutes that lasts. A good choice to chill out with a few friends on a summer night.
