L'immortel (2010)

Charly Matteï (Jean Reno), ex-boss of modern French mafia, decided to retire and lead a family life. Alas, as Carlito's Way has pointed out, there is no easy way out of this and likewise, Charly gets close-range-shot 22 times. And yet, comes through. What follows is a typical gangster movie well balanced between story and realistic action, with modest use of vehicular chases and an appropriate drive towards survival and retribution. The choice of the cast was great. Not only does every mastermind and lackey look the part, but nearly all characters are also well played. The story borrows from certain classics of the sub-genre and it feels deliberately a little confusing in the beginning in terms of who is who, or who did what. That said, it is very early when the spectator starts to get their bearings and from that point onwards the movie flows smoothly and interestingly enough for the rest of the total 110 minutes. Except for a couple of scenes where the presentation went overboard, no particular downsides were perceived. But lack of originality and most importantly depth, unfortunately, reduce this overall well made film to a hardly decent choice.
