The Last Airbender (2010)

M. Night Shyamalan's latest entry is a fantasy/action film targeted primarily to younger audiences. That being said, I found that violence would, at times, be stressed in a quite bold manner considering. According to the story, the kingdom of Fire tries to impose its reign on the other three nations of element: those of Earth, Air, and Water. The Avatar, a living deity, has to confront his personal demons if to restore balance once again. It's a familiar story with its share of rather obvious twists and generic characters, though, some of both are more fleshed out, and the mainly young cast is indeed up to the task. The medieval fantasy setting expands to an interesting blend of Chinese culture and steampunk. The computer generated effects are generally well crafted and when they retain their supporting role the results are impressive. Unfortunately, most of the time they are overused in consequently unrealistic and lacking in rhythm action sequences. Hardcore fans of traditional Chinese martial arts or people looking for a genre-specific movie to watch with their younglings will find something of interest in this about 100 minutes long film. Everyone else may want to skip this one. At least, until the sequel gives a reason not to.
