Jordan Mechner turns back time and retells the 2003 story for a different medium this time, making sure nevertheless, to keep intact all the heroism, the romance and the treachery as found in the homonymous video game masterpiece. The story is good but should have had more depth for a Prince of Persia movie. Both thematic and presentational references to the series are appropriately subtle and well placed. With very few exceptions however, instead of giving personality to the world and the movie respectively, they are just underplayed and rather pointless, as if being there just for the sake of it. And generally, all the Prince of Persia signatures are very inappropriately handled in this film: uninteresting and sometimes confusing parkour sequences, predictable and similarly boring non-choreographed sword fights, dull and over-realistic locales, there is no sense of mystery and magic in this world at all, even the situations the characters find themselves into feel deliberately silly and the screenplay awfully familiar. The entire effort screams "Indiana Jones clone" rather than Prince of Persia, really. The computer generated scenes range from poorly realized to very well made ones. At least the good actors tell the story appropriately and thus provide a few good moments. Overall, the film is mediocre even for a random Indiana Jones clone. There is enough room for a trilogy, so a good second and third part might be a good excuse to watch this one as well. Not recommended otherwise.
