K-PAX (2001)

Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey assume the roles of psychiatrist and patient in an overall well-made mystery drama of alternative concept. I will not reveal anything about the story, but just for clarity's sake, I will only say that it is not all dialogue driven, so don't expect two people in a room talking it out from start to finish. On the contrary, the narrative is more mainstream and actually, quite a few interesting things happen throughout. The story kicks off immediately and the initially (somewhat) frivolous premise, very soon dives deep into a pool of mystery and meaning that stretches as far as the film's finely paced two hours. And successfully at that, no less due to beautiful performances and leading roles that, at times, would single-handedly sustain the immersion in spite of the film's occasionally unhurried tempo. The climax is great and at the end of the day, it played out as was intended to. If only it was as well-thought-out. It is not a love-it or hate-it case. Upon conclusion, I appreciated the artistic expression behind all of it, just as much as I was frustrated by the trade-offs. And yet, I find no reason enough for anyone to skip this wonderful film. Highly recommended.
