This is Spinal Tap was promoted as a mockumentary or rockumentary if you prefer, and in essence, is a parody in a documentary presentation. The camera follows Spinal Tap, a fictional rock/metal band, on tour. Interviews with the band members, relaxation moments, internal ruptures, humorous live concerts, the artists' worries, the music industry, the fans, how the managers fit into all this, quite a lot actually happen in the 80 minutes span the documentary runs. Having said that, from the very beginning it is made clear that this is more of a light-hearted expression of ideas and feelings collaged into an unconventional presentation, rather than an in-depth analysis. And because of this, the story and the presentation are each forced, in a so distinctly contradictory, almost black-comedy-like fashion, that I found myself being given very little room to either relish the superimposed sarcasms or appreciate enough the underlying criticisms. The musical pieces, with the deliberately cheesy lyrics and the familiar yet beautifully tied together tunes, are silly, enjoyable and humorous. In all probability, fans of the rock/metal genre (and especially musicians) will at least enjoy this documentary. As for the non-fans, these will find very little interest in it, if any at all.
